What is Alpha-GPC?
Alpha-GPC is a cholinergic supplement primarily used for its cognitive benefits. However, it also has positive implications for athletes. Alpha-GPC is touted as the superior choline source (it is calls for only 46% of the dose that CDP choline requires), and is often taken alongside other cognitive enhancers.
However, Alpha-GPC does not just supply choline, it also bonds with omega-3 fatty acids resulting in new membranes to build new nerve cells . It further enhances cognition by increasing acetylcholine within the brain, the primary neurotransmitter for learning and memory.
Alpha-GPC can be found in small amounts in red meat, milk, soy, and eggs; however, the amount of usable choline that can be obtained from dietary sources is minimal making direct supplementation a more efficacious method of consumption. Direct supplementation is also suggested for vegetarians and vegans, who may struggle to get adequate choline from dietary sources alone due to their dietary restrictions.
Alpha-GPC Effects & Benefits
Alpha-GPC is primarily used to promote cognitive function. The supplement has been noted to improve attention and reaction time when completing tasks, such as taking a test . Alpha-GPC is also able to improve memory formation and learning [4, 5, 6]. This makes Alpha-GPC a valuable addition to both studying and test taking.
Athletes have long been interest in Alpha-GPC for its affects on physical performance. Alpha-GPC is able to improve an athlete's power output by up to 14% in comparison to a placebo .
Each capsule contains 150mg Alpha-GPC. The recommended dosage of Alpha-GPC is 2 capsules (300mg) once daily.
